Diary of George W. Hichborn [manuscript], 1864.

During the first months of 1864 Hichborn discusses the weather; life in camp; pickett duty; drills, parades and inspections; and letters from home. On May 5 he records "threw up breastworks this morn and remained till noon when we were ordered to advance. Reg was badly cut up I was wounded." On May 6 he records "here I am a prisnor and wounded in the face [len?] Breen is here with me his leg broke." On May 7 he records "here I am yet nothing to eat and my wound not dressed [?] Pinkham and Elliot died last night." Hichborn continues with his journey as a prisoner through Orange, Gordonsville, and Charlottesville where the train waited for repairs to railroad track torn up by Hunter's cavalry, stay in Lynchburg prison, and journey south to his arrival at Andersonville on July 29. In Andersonville he continues to record weather, rations drawn, war news and rumors, hopes for exchange, deaths of Maine boys, the removal of prisoners in the face of Sherman's advance, transfer to Camp Lawton prison where Lincoln received a 950 majority in the prisoner's presidential election, transfer to Savannah, exchange and voyage to Annapolis, and furlough and arrival in Portland, Maine on December 17. There are frequent mentions of Captain Walter G. Morrill, and Major Ellis Spear, and comments on Sgt. Reuel Thomas who was taken prisoner with him.
